As a college graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, I use my understanding of the fundamental similarities and differences across languages to put myself in my students' shoes, in order to allow them to fully comprehend the ways English and Spanish function differently or similarly to their own native language. Unlike a lot of teachers of dead languages, I like to emphasize conversation and active use. Besides being much more fun than just reading texts, all evidence points to conversation being the best way to learn a language. Generally speaking, I like to spend 1/3 of the class in conversation, 1/3 in introducing and practicing grammar, and 1/3 in reading texts. No matter how much we're covering in a day--and expect to do a lot of work!--the mood is always fun. Many students have told me they look forward to my class after a long day at work or their usual school, and I know I always have a great time. Incredibly, scholars have found a way to teach an adult a second language without the time-consumin g and tedious memorizing of grammar rules and vocabulary. My first contact with the method I use to teach was as a student in England, then later as an instructor. My course is one-on-one interactive, so you start speaking in the first minutes of your first lesson. The concept is simple; teach you to speak a second language the same way you learned to speak your native language e.g., first hear and understand, repeat (speak), read and eventually write. I would say that 2 hours per week is the minimum if you really want to be fluent. In some programs they use the word "fast track", but I don't like that word. It makes the huge task of learning another language sound like you should be able to do it quickly, and it's proven that if you try to learn too fast, you will just as quickly forget!
