My proficiency level would be a moderate beginner.
I am a sales engineer in the construction business. I regularly travel the state of Florida in general, south Florida in particular. Many of the engineering firms, contractors and wholesalers that I deal with on a regular basis are of Latin American and or of Cuban decent and speak Spanish the majority of the time. Furthermore, the inevitable overthrow of the regime in Cuba has my company preparing to expand into that market immediately there after.
I currently perform technical training sessions for engineers, building, plumbing and fire inspectors in the state of Florida. I am also certified by the State of Florida to dispense Ceu's(continu ing education units)in certain specialized areas. I will be responsible for performing this same work in Cuba and obviously in Spanish.I hold undergraduate degrees in business and engineering as a well as an MBA.
My need for improvement is in all areas! Vocabulary, grammer, conversation and comprehension are all areas that I need drastic improvement. I understand how to conjugate verbs in the present tense (for the most part) and I am told that my pronunciation is good.
Moreov er,I realize that to learn a language is a process. I am decidedly unhappy with the CD instructional courses that are availiable and do not work. Predicated upon how much ground can be covered in an hour, maybe two per week, will dictate how much instruction that is necessary on a weekly basis. It all boils down to my level of comprehension and daily study habits.
As far as the lessons/teach er, learning is like anything else, the more I study and practice what I am taught during each lesson, on my own, the faster I will expedite the learning process. I am not looking for a drill instructor, I am seeking a guide to help me achieve a goal that I need, must obtain.
Fina lly, it's my time and money that is being spent on learning how to speak Spanish proficiently. I am at the point to where it has now become a necessity to master this language.
I am in serious need of a competent enabler for weekend sessions.

I don't know a word of Brazilian Portuguese. I used to speak Spanish almost proficiently many years ago (in high school). I am very proficient in French and I am fluent in Dutch. I want my teacher to be very open and supportive and warm and focus on conversation and pronunciation and vocabulary (and grammar obviously but I think my background in romance languages might help in that area). I want to travel and possibly work in Brazil...I am a law student so the only chance I would get to go to Brazil would be to work and to work there, I have to speak the language. So, I want to learn enough to be able to at least START working and then become more proficient as I am immersed.
