I'm currently taking ASL 101 at Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville's campus. I'm struggling with understanding signing, I know my alphabets and numbers up to 20, my fingers don't move as swiftly as some of my fellow classmates. The text book that I’m currently using is: Signing Naturally, Units 1-6, it comes with two CD's, I'm really struggling with the mini dialogues, so I need help with conversation skills.

I am teaching ASL as a foriegn language at a local high school and have not yet passed the proficiancy portion of my certification exam. I was involved in a deaf community in Lubbock, Texas when I was a student at Texas Tech University. Since leaving Lubbock, my ASL skills have diminished. I am interested in being able to pass my exam by April, 2011, and may be interested in continuing my learning to eventually become an interpretor.

I have an eight-year-ol d grandson who is deaf. He has a cochlear implant, but he is one of the few it does not work for. He is in public school, in second grade. I have learned some basic sign language, but I need more. In fact, our family (myself; my husband; his father, my son; perhaps my daughter; and maybe a couple of friends.
I can communicate with him fairly well. However, I am trying to do homework with him and help him learn to read better. So I need communication skills and ASL grammar basics because his teacher said they teach new concepts using ASL and then English order when reading and doing his school work. He frequently uses ASL when trying to tell me something and I am very slow understanding . He sometimes gets frustrated with me.

I hope you can help us. I have had a very difficult time finding support for teaching sign language to extended families. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.
