I believe that language is not a monolith. Its flexible nature means that attempting to acquire ‘mastery’ is not as important to me as the process through which language skills are acquired. Therefore there are no attempts at seeking perfection or uniformity in methods of learning in my classes; each language student’s preferred way of learning is encouraged. Because in classroom situations language levels of proficiency are bound to differ for the student flexibility in teaching is of paramount importance. I take the view that every step of language learning is a successful step including what might initially appear to be errors.
To this end, I prefer classroom situations where students are encouraged to lack inhibition about making grammatical 'mistakes'. I like it when students discover that words appear to have limits and that in some cases use of body language is crucial to enhancing communication . My lessons are completely oral - there is no reading or writing at all because the spoken language is a completely separate entity from reading and writing. The lessons will start with a greeting and and a rhythm exercise so that the student can become acquainted with the pacing of the English language. I will adapt my lessons to each student's desires. I can teach business English or travel English. I can help the student prepare for an interview or prepare to give a presentation. Each lesson is divided into segments, and each segment is constructivel y evaluated by the teacher so the student can see immediate improvement. The homework given is also speech based, and it consists of exercises for the student to complete during regular, everyday conversations . Progress will be assessed at the next lesson. With my proven methods, the student will see a rapid improvement in their conversationa l English abilities. |
