Details: Objective: Work as a full-time or independent contractor providing interpretation or Arabic translation preferably as a medical interpreter between patient and staff. Summary of qualifications: • Excellent Arabic speaking and writing skills, with good American English verbal and written skills. o Understands 8 regional dialects and linguistic styles and registers o Strong written skills and understanding of translation process • Freelance translation of religious, theology, and political topics • Extensive knowledge and experience in the Middle East cultures and societies. o Understands language as an expression of culture. o Uses culturally appropriate behavior and able to choose appropriate time to clarify or interject by respecting the goals of the encounter • Studied historical and contemporary religious, political and economics tendencies. • Ability to provide language support during interviews, meetings, and conferences. • Ability to interpret, translate and review written documents and analyze spoken communications. • Uses computer programs such as Mawrid dictionary and Arabic Master English/Arabic word processor • Proficient technical skills: MSFT Windows, Excel and Word. Applicable interpreting skills between patient/provider: • Explains role of the interpreter to patient and provider • Recognizes the complexity of the clinical encounter and added factor of linguistic barrier • Sets tone of the patient/provider encounter to manage spatial configuration and flow of communication to preserve accuracy and completeness, and to assess and address potential areas of discomfort for patient (age, gender of interpreter, no previous experience with interpreters) • Encourages and fosters direct communication between provider and patient • Maintains professional distance and integrity • Diffuses conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial • Clarifies instructions, follow up steps in a diplomatic, effective manner Employment Jan 2003 - Present Self employed - Business Owner – Boston Mass 1998 - 2003 Contractor - Big Dig project - Boston Mass 1996 – 1998 Preacher – Biblical Old and New Testament – English and Arabic Education Associate of Art (A.A.)
