Description |
I am actually looking for a Japanese tutor for my 11-year-old daughter, who has been teaching herself Japanese from a workbook I found on Amazon and an iPhone app. In addition to some phrases, she knows colors, fruits, some transportatio n and relatives. She's an exceptional student (straight-A student and her standardized test scores nearly off and completely off the charts) and is self-driven. She is really trying hard to learn Japanese on her own, but she needs a tutor. She really wants to be able to read Japanese. She would like to meet with a tutor at least once a week.

Description |
I have been studying Arabic on and off for the past few years as part of a NELC degree as an undergraduate , and now as an Art History PhD focusing on the architecture of medieval Spain and North Africa. I have been frustrated with my progress in the past, and am now at a point at Harvard's curriculum where continuing my language study is difficult in relation with the courses offered. My grammar is fairly well advanced, but my vocabulary is pretty basic, and while I can read fairly well, I would very much like to improve my writing and conversationa l skills. Up until now, I have worked through al-Kitab I and most of II, though I own the third book in the series as well. I would also like to begin working on my North African dialect, in preparation for research abroad in Morocco. Having finished my coursework, my responsibilit ies for this upcoming academic year include working as a teaching fellow and preparing for my generals exams, but I am willing to dedicate between 3 and 5 hours a week to working with a tutor, in addition to any time required for homework or assignments.

Why you are learning your foreign language?: When I was at a very young age(8 years old), I was introduced to the Japanese culture, and was enthralled to learn everything about Japan, even if it was just basic knowledge. From that time to present, I've self taught myself the sheer basics to get the vocabulary well-known, in addition to getting traditionally trained at a community college for a year. My purpose for this training is to solidify everything that I've gained so far, but I want to start from the beginning just to be on the safe side. Also I want to put my skills to the test by applying to JLPT to get an official certification in Japanese language(Read ing and Writing, etc). All of this is for my burning desire to tour Japan and be one with its entire culture.
Y our proficiency level (e.g., beginner, etc.)? Truthfully since I've been self teaching myself for the past 20 years, I really don't have a gauge as to where my placement is. I've translated a couple of things to see if I was able to do it, and I did an acceptable job to the limited knowledge I have, but its within my own self merits. So that's the reason why I want to start from stage 1.
The areas in which you feel you need particular improvement (e.g., grammar, conversation, etc)? Definitely in Grammar and Conversation, because I usually get shy, mess up the sayings, and make out an entirely different saying from the original conversation. Writing as well, because I know if you form two different words together, it'll mean a completely different saying, or have no meaning at all.
How much time you want to dedicate to your language lessons? As much time as needed until I can read, write, and speak thoroughly. I want to be engulfed into the entire process.
W hat qualities you are looking for in your lessons or in your teacher? I want my teacher to know that I have a passion for this, and I'll take the lessons very seriously. I want them to be honest with me, give me all the knowledge that they have, from Proper Japanese, to Slang Japanese. Also to give me challenges that are attainable, and I will follow them to the letter.
