To study english in your country or study abroad
I'm forty years old, and my daughter is 12. I would like she learn english perfectly. I wonder if study abroad is OK or if it's better to study in your country in some camp in english. I've heard about some camps very well. I think when a student (a child) goes to other country, he tries to talk with other students from their country. What do you think about this?

Both would be all right. To study abroad would probley be a longer time apart, though. A camp would be nice to, it would probley be anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks. I'm 16 and had wanted to study German in Germany this summer, but wasn't able to. I also looked at a camp in Minnesota (U.S), but also ran out of time. I'd would recomend anything from books to CD's and tapes, to help her learn, until you can make a decision.

Good luck!

Hello Senora,

The decision is determined by your goal, if you will please allow me to explain. If your goal for your daughter is that she become somewhat familiar with the language or even moderately fluent, a camp would suit your purposes. If you want her to become more fluent, fluent to a higher degree, she will need to attend an immersion school, so that she is completely surrounded by english speaking. If you send her to an English-speaking country, she will have no opportunity to lapse back into her native tongue in her out-of-class time. That is critical to fluency.

I hope this helps. Contact me if you have more questions please.

Thank for your answer Charlie Koonce. I think you're all right. Usually in Spain we are studing english for many years but we don't speak it well, the kids in the class are too much. For example I can write english enough correctly, but when I speak to someone in english I'm not very sure. I hope it were changing now, my experience is when I was a kid. The problem is my daughter is 12 years old and I think that with that age, the children try talk with other students from their country (in this case Spain). She doesn't know how much important is the english. Don't you think she is very young to go abroad?. She write with other penfriends by post and by e-mail and she is very happy with it, although I help her a lot with her letters.

Hola Señora,
Your daughter is very young to study abroad by herself. If you intend to send her by herself to study in an english-speaking country, I suggest you wait. Until then, books, e-mails with native english-speakers, and classes will help her gain confidence for when she is ready.
:) Best of Luck!

Hello! I'm Dirk. I come from Taiwan. I'm curious about Ukraine and Russia. I hope that I can study russian in my college life and travel these countries someday. But such person like me don't know these countries very well. Worst of all , my family consider that it is dangerous to visit your country. Could you help me to know more about your country ?

Re:To study english in your country or study abroad
On the subject of summer camps: for anyone with a child interested in learning English who feels they may benifit from a week or two of being immersed in another language, or just wants the experience of travelling to the UK. I work with a charity called ATE (Active Training and Education) who run summer camps for children aged 8-16 at various sites all over the UK. While the majority of the children are British, we have one or two who are from other countries who have come to practice their English as well as have a fun holiday. For anyone who is interested in this opportunity, if you reply to this post to let me know and I can forward information to you.
Thanks
Bryony
