Details: From March 2002 through August 2003, I worked for the National School & Community Corps (AmeriCorps) at Germantown High School. I tutored special-ed and regular students in reading. I was a wraparound for an autistic student. I participated in Lunch 'n' Learn, Book Buddies, YouthWorks and 100 Book Challenge programs. I participated in job- and college-preparation workshops. During the summer of 2002, I worked at St. Madeleine's day-care center as part of the YouthWorks program. I've also taught elementary and middle-school children at the Huntington Learning Center in Langhorne and as a volunteer after-school tutor in the Mayor’s Children’s Investment Strategy. I have been a tutor at the Center for Literacy for over five years. In the first six months of working with a previous student, a 46-year-old former alcoholic factory worker, his grade-level reading score went from 2.9 to 5.6. It was the second highest reading increase at the Center in 2002. My present student is a 22-year-old man from Senegal who has been in this country about seven months. I want to devote myself to tutoring children and, when possible, mentoring them as well. As a professional writer and voracious reader, I can’t imagine not being able to read and write.
