Hello, I would like to study Thai in the Chicagoland area. I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Thailand and have been inspired to learn the language more seriously. With a grasp of the language I could communicate with people as well as gain a deeper insight into Thai culture. I have studied on my own for several years (admittedly the learning has been slow). I am a English speaker looking to learn Russian. Communication has been a passion for me for quite some time. I aim to achieve the capability of communication across most borders. Russian is a first step, my ultimate goal is to be proficient if not fluent in 4 languages. I want to begin with Russian because Russia has always interested me. I love the history the music (Vysotsky, to be more specific) and most of all I have fallen in love with the Russian authors of the 19th century, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, etc. They are unmatched in their technical proficiency, and their metaphysical quandaries. To truly capture the essence of these great figures I need to understand their native tongue. I hope to dedicate as much time as possible to this study, however my financial situation is tight. I would like to find a teacher who is understanding of my fiscal situation along with my busy schedule.

I am looking for a tutor/teacher who would be willing to work with me on listening comprehension as well as speaking skills. I would assess myself as an intermediate beginner. I can read and write Urdu script and can make my way through basic conversations about self and family. My reasons for learning are for both personal (family/frien ds) as well as professional (potential move to India within the next few years).
Thus far I have used various resources for self study including Rosetta Stone's Hindi program, The Teach Yourself Urdu Books (by David Matthews and Mohamed Kasim Dalvi) and the new text 'Let's Study Urdu'. I'm a fairly focused self-learner but need someone with patience to help me work on spoken verb drills. I have a sense of how the language works grammatically I'm trying to now push myself to speak comfortably and expand my working vocabulary. I prefer a conversation approach sort of like the Berlitz method, where there is verbal repetition of vocabulary and the concept until it feels 'natural'.
Due to geographic constraints I imagine lessons would take place over the phone or through a voice chat program like SKYPE. In regards to length of sessions, I am thinking 1-2 hours at a time with an almost conversation immersion approach. I am a graduate student (Non Urdu related) and sometimes my schedule can get hectic. In the beginning I'm thinking maybe 1 to 2 sessions a week, ideally in the evenings (EST) with the expectation that I would continue working/playi ng with the language between sessions so that we can quickly move onto the next concept.
