My interest in learning Croatian is as follows:
I am married to a man who was born and raised in Vojvodina. We met in graduate school in the US so we have always spoken English together. Our children are 8 and 10 and we have just begun spending time in Dubrovnik (we went for the first time last summer). Our purpose is not just to be in a beautiful place but to share the cultural heritage with the children. We are returning to Dubrovnik for three weeks this summer and I would like to be more comfortable in the language. My-laws live near us so I have been exposed to the language over the last 10 years, but have not spoken (in gatherings we speak English). Since our return last summer, I have been studying Croatian with Pimler tapes, but vocabulary and sense of grammar are lacking.
H ere is my language background (this should give you an idea of my ability to learn another language: I am multilinual in French, English, Swedish and German. I can muddle through in Italian. Swedish, German, and English were all spoken around the house in my childhood. I have a M.A. in TESOL and a PhD in linguistic anthropology. I have also studied Latin. Briefly in graduate school I studied Indonesian. This is the first Slavic lanuage I have tried to learn.
My goal: I need improvement in all areas of Croatian. I am looking for very serious and dedicated teacher with specific training in foreign language teaching. I am a serious and dedicated student. I would like to spend one hour every day with a teacher and will continue studying with tapes in the car. I hope to get a good grip of the grammar and do some serious pronunciation drills. When we return to Dubrovnik this summer I will look for a class or teacher to continue (July 20-August 8) my studies, about 1 hour per day.
Thank you for your interest.

Description |
I am a sophomore at a private college in Wisconsn planning to travel abroad in Istanbul next year. Although I took a few private lessons with a Turkish exchange student at the beginning of last semester, I am looking to expand my knowledge and retention of Turkish grammar and vocabulary and gain some competency to help me in my travels and allow me to become more intimately involved with the culture.
I am currently applying for a scholarship with Global Partners to help me cover the costs of Turkish study, whether it be through a private instructor or a college class. Though I am from Michigan, I plan on living and working in Portland with my roommate over the summer and anticipate dedicating a few hours with a private instructor (more with a class) each week to Turkish.
Any information about language programs in the Portland area would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
